Eye Shadow 101: Blending Techniques for Every Skill Level

Eyes are the window to the soul — and a beautifully blended eye shadow look is the frame. Whether you're a total beginner or looking to level up your technique, Fleur & Blush has you covered with these essential blending tips.

Start with a Primer

Eye primer is non-negotiable. It prevents creasing, intensifies colour payoff, and keeps your shadow in place all day. Apply a thin layer across your lid and let it set for a minute before moving on.

The Windshield Wiper Motion

For beginners, the windshield wiper technique is your best friend. Load a fluffy blending brush with a transition shade and sweep it back and forth in the crease using light pressure. This builds a seamless gradient without any hard lines.

Layering Colours

Start light and build up. Apply your lightest shade all over the lid first, then add a mid-tone to the crease, and finally a deeper shade to the outer corner. Blend between each step for a smooth, dimensional finish.

The Stamp and Blend Method

For more intense colour on the lid, use a flat shader brush to stamp the shadow onto the centre of the lid, then blend the edges with a fluffy brush. This technique gives you maximum pigment impact without muddying the colours.

Highlight to Finish

A dab of shimmer or highlight on the inner corner and brow bone instantly opens up the eye and ties the whole look together.
