Contouring for Beginners: Sculpt and Define Your Features

Contouring can seem intimidating, but with the right techniques and products, it's easier than you think. At Fleur & Blush, we're breaking it down so anyone can sculpt and define their features like a pro.

What Is Contouring?

Contouring uses darker shades to create the illusion of shadow, making certain areas of the face appear more recessed or defined. When paired with highlighting, it adds incredible depth and dimension to your look.

Choose the Right Product

For beginners, a matte powder contour is the easiest to blend and control. Cream contour gives a more natural finish but requires a bit more skill. Start with powder if you're new to the technique.

Where to Contour

The most common areas are the hollows of the cheeks, the sides of the nose, the temples, and the jawline. To find your cheek hollows, suck in your cheeks slightly — apply contour just above that shadow and blend upward toward the ear.

The Golden Rule: Blend

Harsh lines are the number one contouring mistake. Use a fluffy brush or damp beauty sponge to blend your contour thoroughly until there are no visible edges — just a seamless, natural-looking shadow.

Pair with Highlight

Contouring without highlighting is like painting half a picture. Apply highlighter to the tops of the cheekbones, the bridge of the nose, and the brow bone to create a balanced, sculpted finish.

Less Is More

Start with a light hand and build gradually. It's much easier to add more product than to remove it. Step back from the mirror regularly to check the overall effect.
